Footprint In The Sand
One night a man had a dream.
He dreamt he was walking with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes of his life.
For each scene,
he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand;
one belonged to him, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it had happened at
the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered the man and
he questioned the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you’d walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that
during the most troublesome times in my life,
there is only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why,
when I needed you most, you would leave me.”
The Lord replied,
“My precious child, I love you and
I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you.”
어느 날 밤 한 사람이 꿈을 꾸었다.
꿈속에서 그는 신과 함께 해변가를 산책하고 있었다.
그리고 하늘 저편에서는
그가 지금까지 살아온 삶의 모든 장면들이
영화처럼 상영되고 있었다.
각각의 장면마다 그는 모래위에 새겨진
두 줄의 발자국을 발견할 수 있었다.
하나는 그의 것이었고,
다른 하나는 신의 발자국이었다.
그가 살아오는 동안 신이 언제나 그와 함께 걸었던 것이다.
마지막 장면이 펼쳐지고 있을 때쯤
그는 문득 길 위에 있는 발자국들이
어떤 때는 단지 한 줄밖에 나 있지 않다는 것을 알아차렸다.
또 그것이 그의 생애에서
가장 절망적이고 슬픈 시기마다 그러했었다는 사실을 알았다.
그래서 그는 신에게 따졌다.
“신이시여,
당신은 언제나 나와 함께 걸어갈 것이라고 했습니다.
하지만 제 인생에서 가장 힘든 시기들을 뒤돌아보니
거기에는 발자국이 한 줄밖에 없었습니다.
난 이유를 모르겠습니다.
왜 당신은 정작 필요할 때면 나를 버렸습니까?”
신이 말했다.
“내 소중한 사람아,
난 그대를 사랑하며 결코 그대를 떠나지 않았다.
그대가 힘들고 고통스러웠을 때마다
너의 발자국이 한 줄밖에 없음은
그때마다 내가 그대를 업고 걸어갔기 때문이다.”
